The highlands lends itself to dramatic vistas and backdrops for some of the biggest movie blockubusters we have all watched, from the comfort of home. Take the chance to tick some of the below off your bucket list!

Jacobite Steam Train and Glennfinnan Viaduct, Lochaber – From the Harry Potter Movie, The Chamber of Secrets.

Relive the magic of Harry Potter with the Jacobite Steam Train, famous in the film as the Hogwarts Express which transported the students from Kings Cross, London to the Hogwarts School of Wizardry. 

In real life it’s still very impressive and one of the worlds greatest railway journeys taking you on a 135km round trip of Ben Nevis. 

The iconic 21-arched Glennfinnan Viaduct is recognisable from the 2nd film in the series, The Chamber of Secrets where Harry and Ron flew in the magical car.

The Fairy Glen, Portree – From the 2007 movie Stardust 

Unexplained fairy circles made of stone, an ancient ruined castle and conical hills, this stunning spot in Scotland is as magical as the film Stardust in which it was featured. 

Located in the north of the Isle of Skye, between the villages of Sheader and Balnaknock. You’ll recognise the location from the scene where Lamia meets another witch, Ditchwater Sal, who’s sat at her caravan and puts an enchantment on her which prevents her from seeing the fallen star. 

Eilean Donan Castle – Made famous in the movie Highlander

One of the most recognisable castles in Scotland, it’s a popular location for films, tv and photo shoots. It’s not hard to see why, situated at the point where three great sea lochs meet and surrounded by majestic forested mountains of Kintail, it’s a spellbinding location. The castle itself lay in ruins until it was bought in 1911 and restored. 

Eilean Donan Castle served as the Scottish MI6 headquarters in The World is Not Enough.

The Quiraing in the Isle of Skye – Used in the 2015 adaption of Macbeth.

This landslip on the northernmost point of Trotternish Ridge is one of Skye’s most iconic landscapes. With its defined cliffs, stunning pinnacles and sweeping hillsides this location is the location for multiple well-known movies. 

Macbeth (2015) starring Michael Fassbender used The Quiraing setting for the part in the film when Macbeth returns from battle and is anointed The Thane of Cawdor by King Duncan.

Loch Leven – One of many Scottish locations used in the film Braveheart.

One of the most famous Scottish based movies of all time, Braveheart has a host of beautiful filming locations around Scotland. 

After the killing of Mornay, Wallace treks along a magnificent mountain path filmed on the Mamores, a group of ten mountains linked by a narrow ridge stretching between Loch Leven and Glen Nevis.

Walk in William Wallaces footsteps and enjoy this challenging hike, the ten peaks is walkable in a day for those with a good standard of fitness.
